Jesus And Your Family
JESUS AND YOUR FAMILY
Sunday (9/3), gather with your church family as we turn our attention to Matthew 12:38-50. The Pharisees, who had consistently attempted to badger, stumble, provoke, and stop the Son of God and had been unsuccessful, asked Jesus to show them a sign that He was who He claimed.
He answered them by stating the only sign He would give was the sign of the prophet Jonah (12:39), who had reluctantly gone to Nineveh with a message of judgment. Before he had gone, he tried to run from God by going in the opposite direction.
Jonah learned that you can’t run or hide from Him. One can imagine the horror he experienced when he realized he would be swallowed by a whale that God had prepared as the instrument of his chastisement (Jonah 1:17).
Jesus told His skeptics that just as Jonah remained in the belly of the whale three days and nights, so would the Son of Man (12:40). This was not only a more significant sign than all of His other miracles, deliverances, and healings but it was the primary sign that He, Jesus of Nazareth was the prophesied Messiah of the Old Testament.
The Pharisees and Scribes, unlike the men of Nineveh who had repented the moment Jonah preached judgment, hardened their hearts and adamantly refused to believe, no matter how much proof from the prophets, that Jesus was the Son of God.
At the same time, Jesus was talking with the Pharisees; His mother, brother, and sisters came out of their concern for Him, wanting to speak with Him. When He was notified, He replied, “Who is My mother, and who are My brothers.” (12:48).
Jesus’ answer to those who continued their unbelief and how he defined who His family was provides an example for all who have spent years sharing the gospel with family and friends who are skeptics, scoffers, self-righteous, or superficial.
I look forward to our time together. Please pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the entire Calvary Chapel family.
There are several opportunities for worship. On-campus (10:00 am), drive-in church (92.1fm), and online (Facebook, YouTube: Calvary Inverness); (website: calvaryinv.com
