Living in the Last Hour

LIVING IN THE LAST HOUR

Join your Calvary Chapel family tomorrow (Sunday, June 22, at 10:00 a.m.) in the main sanctuary or on our website (www.calvaryinv.com), Facebook, and YouTube (Calvary Inverness) as we continue our series on the book of 1 John (2:18-23).

John had lived longer than the church itself had existed. He was young when Jesus called him, along with his brother James, to follow Him. Together, they witnessed everything Jesus did, including the teachings about the kingdom of God, the healings, miracles, and deliverances.

Years later, he was the last surviving Apostle. All the others had been martyred for their faith. He had faced execution by the Roman Emperor Domitian, but after surviving, he was exiled to the Island of Patmos. Following his release, he moved to Ephesus.

As John surveyed the health of the church, he observed the vibrancy of a community that loved God. He likely heard testimonies from many people about how the Lord had touched their lives, with marriages restored, individuals set free from demons, and souls transformed for eternity.

Yet, something was bothering him. It may have taken him a moment to pinpoint it, but he knew that if what he sensed wasn’t addressed, it could cause irreparable harm to the church.

The Holy Spirit guided John’s thoughts, directing him toward what he needed to know about the dangers facing the church.

Wolves were infiltrating God’s flock. Men who pretended to be Christians had come in to distort God’s Word, deceive the people, and recruit as many as possible to leave the church and follow them.

John didn’t hold back with his message. The church was caught off guard. They needed to awaken from their spiritual slumber, understand the danger they faced, and identify and eliminate the false teachers.

Therefore, he sent his letter outlining what the church needed to understand. First, they were living in a specific era. Second, he instructed them on how to identify faithful followers of Christ within the church community. Third, he assured them they didn’t have to do this alone. Fourth, he provided them with the truth so they could refute the heresies concerning Jesus.

May our church family recognize that the same purpose God had for the early church applies today. May our love for Him, His Word, and each other, as well as our desire to serve, continue to grow until His return.

In His Strong Love,
Pastor
