Good Fatherly Advice

GOOD FATHERLY ADVICE

Join your Calvary Chapel family tomorrow (Sunday, June 15, at 10:00 a.m.) in the main sanctuary or on our website (www.calvaryinv.com

), Facebook, and YouTube (Calvary Inverness) as we celebrate Father's Day and continue our series on the book of 1 John (2:12-17).
John was an elderly man. He rightfully looked upon those who had come to Christ as his spiritual children. Unlike him, many of them had not grown up in a home that worshipped the One true God, the God of the Bible.

John had things he needed to express to the church. What he needed to convey could be defined as “tough love.” This means that the content of John's letter was unlikely to be pleasant. He didn’t condemn them or try to guilt them into serving the Lord. His approach contrasted with what he might have felt.

First, he affirmed what was commendable in them and the numerous church ministries. He followed the Apostle Paul’s advice, “to speak the truth in love” (Eph 4:15). He understood that it's not only what you say that matters, but how you say it. John didn’t have a vindictive bone in his body.

Instead, out of the deep and abiding love he had for them, which was given by the Lord Jesus Christ, first in His earthly ministry and then right before He ascended, he was endowed with power from on high.

Second, John challenged the church to abandon the one thing that could render them ineffective in their ministry work within the city of Ephesus. He understood that, regardless of the good that the Lord Jesus Christ had done for the church, if they persisted in their fleshly ambitions, there would come a point when Jesus would withdraw His hand from their lives. The church, as an organization, would continue, but the anointing on their lives would fade away.

May our church family recognize that the same purpose God had for the early church applies today. May our love for Him, His Word, each other, and our desire to serve continue to grow until His return.
In His Strong Love,
Pastor
