David\'s Dysfunctional Family
DAVID’S DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY
Tonight (Wednesday 07/06, 7:00 pm), gather with your Calvary Chapel family in the Holy Ground Cafe’ or on our website (www.calvaryinv.com), Facebook, and Youtube (Calvary Inverness) as we continue with our three-year journey through the Bible (2 Samuel 13-18).
King David, who had been blessed beyond measure. He acknowledged that the throne, military success, deliverance from those that hated him, and his family had been given to him by God.
Despite having everything, David fell into sin. And like many of God’s people, he made things worse by trying to cover it up. He wrote in Psalms thirty-two the private agony he endured while concealing what he had done from everyone that looked up to him as an example of Godly leadership, “When I kept silent, my bones grew old Through my groaning all the day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was turned into the drought of summer” (Ps. 32:3-4).
After David was confronted, he quickly confessed. It must have been an enormous weight lifted off of him. And to his credit, he also wrote about God’s graciousness and mercy toward him. In the same Psalm, he wrote, “I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” And You forgave the iniquity of my sin” (Ps. 32:5).
The fallout would be extremely humiliating and painful in the aftermath of David's sin. His children would treat one another viciously, and some would turn on him. Unfortunately, David did not help himself. He had disobeyed God by marrying multiple women. For most of his adult life, he was an absentee father when his children needed to be reigned in from their destructive behavior and discipled.
The lessons learned through David should be a reminder of the importance of growing in spiritual maturity. Understanding that one’s salvation from the penalty of sin is just the beginning. And that the Word of God has been given so that His people can know what it means to be a Godly husband, wife, Father, Mother, brother, sister, son, or daughter.
Peter sums up the importance of growing in your relationship with the Lord. He wrote to the church scattered across the Roman Empire, “But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:5-11).
Please pray that this three-year journey, through the Word of God, will be received by open hearts that long to grow in the Grace and Knowledge of Jesus. And that He would do a deep and practical Work in and through us for a world in desperate need of a Savior.
