Facebook, and YouTube (Calvary Inverness). We will continue our journey through the New Testament in the Gospel of Luke (1:1-38).
Luke was a journalist, historian, theologian, physician, and beloved companion on the Apostle Paul's travels. God chose him to chronicle Jesus' ministry from His birth through the resurrection in the Gospel of Luke, as well as the church's early years and the transition of leadership from Peter to Paul in the Book of Acts.

More than four hundred years passed without a prophetic utterance or vision. This period stretches from the prophet Malachi to the prologue of Luke's Gospel.

The first message from heaven came when a priest named Zacharias was chosen to serve in the Temple. As he tended the incense, he was startled to see the angel Gabriel standing at the right side of the altar of incense.

Seeing Zacharias's fear, Gabriel spoke the first words since God had spoken to the prophet Malachi: "Do not be afraid, for your prayer is heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John (God is gracious).

His birth fulfilled many Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah's forerunner. Great in the sight of the Lord, he would primarily prepare Israel for the Messiah by calling the people to repentance.

Six months later, Gabriel traveled to the small town of Nazareth to visit a young virgin named Mary. Like Zacharias, she was startled by Gabriel's visit and its purpose. But unlike the humble priest, she believed his message and surrendered her life to God's will.
Luke wrote his Gospel for Theophilus, who may have been a Roman senator; a benefactor who owned Luke as his personal physician and freed him out of gratitude for healing him; or a pseudonym used to protect the church from persecution by the Roman government.

Luke interviewed dozens of Jesus' disciples, followers, and family members—including Mary and His brothers and sisters—as well as people He had personally healed. Guided by the Holy Spirit, he meticulously recorded these details and passed them on to Theophilus so he could be certain that his faith was genuine and that everlasting life was promised.

I'm excited to continue this journey with you through all twenty-seven books of the New Testament, trusting that we'll all be changed as we grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Please pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the entire Calvary Chapel family.
In His Strong Love,
Pastor
