Hearing the words of Jesus

HEARING THE WORDS OF JESUS

Tonight, Wednesday, July 8, at 7:00 p.m., join your Calvary Chapel family for coffee at 6:00 p.m., followed by the service at 7:00 p.m. in the Holy Ground Café or online via our website (www.calvaryinv.com), Facebook, and YouTube (Calvary Inverness). We will continue our journey through the New Testament in the Gospel of Mark (3:30-4:41).

The resistance against Jesus was intensifying. The crowds continued to follow Him everywhere, eagerly listening and awaiting His next miracle, healing, or deliverance. However, the religious leaders, along with His family and neighbors from Nazareth, had reached their limit. It was now time to act.

Rejection is an inevitable part of life. Friends may abandon you, enemies may intensify their dislike or hatred, and the most heartbreaking is when family members turn against you.
Prophets like Jeremiah recognized this harsh reality. He recounted how he learned that his own family and neighbors in his hometown had conspired to have him killed. This was overwhelming for him. He felt deeply depressed and lamented to God, questioning why he was ever born.

Jesus encountered similar hostility. His life was marked by contrasts: His family doubted Him, yet the twelve disciples abandoned everything for Him. The crowds listened intently to His teachings, while Scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians examined His words and actions closely, seeking to find fault and undermine Him.

There is much we can learn from men like Jeremiah. When in pain, turn to the Lord and cast all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). But there is even more to learn from Jesus.

No matter what Jesus faced, He never quit, slowed down, or struck out in anger. He continued to do what His Father had commanded Him. He was on a mission and stayed on mission. He understood that He had been sent to the lost sheep of Israel.

Turning to the crowd, at the same time turning a deaf ear to His critics, Jesus began to teach in parables. These were stories from everyday life that pointed to a spiritual truth.
They were used so that those who believed in Him and desired to know what the parables meant would find a doorway to understanding. But those with hardened hearts, filled with unbelief, would scoff at His technique and walk away unfazed by anything He said.

We can learn a lot from Jesus’ use of parables. They are designed for those with receptive, attentive, and discerning hearts. These individuals seek to understand Jesus more, desire closeness to Him, and wish to follow Him throughout their lives.

Though the twelve understood the parables, they still had to learn to trust Jesus more. After a day of teaching, Jesus told His disciples to go to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. As they traveled, Jesus, tired from the day, fell asleep at the bottom of the boat.

A sudden storm with fierce winds, crashing waves, and heavy rain struck. The disciples, seven of whom were experienced fishermen on the Sea of Galilee, became fearful. They all called out loudly for Jesus to wake up and assist them before it was too late.

When Jesus approached the disciples, He stood at the bow and quietly commanded the sea, “Peace, be still.” Instantly, the sea became calm again. Then Jesus looked at the twelve with disappointment, for they had not yet learned to trust Him in life's storms.

Building a deeper relationship with Jesus and trusting Him during life's challenges is crucial. When faced with unexpected trials, you'll remain steadfast and resilient, as your trust in Jesus fortifies your inner strength and allows you to walk confidently with Him.

I'm excited to continue this journey with you through the twenty-seven books of the New Testament, trusting that none of us will remain unchanged as we grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Please pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the entire Calvary Chapel family.
In His Strong Love,
Pastor
