A WORD TO BELIEVING WIVES

The message of Jesus Christ initially spread rapidly in Jerusalem, then across Judea, and ultimately throughout the Roman Empire. Both Jews and Gentiles began to believe in Christ, starting with hundreds and growing to thousands. Wherever the church was established, the gospel influenced every part of society.
Many Jews in the East had settled near ancient Babylon because their ancestors had lived there, and they did not return to Jerusalem after Cyrus the Great freed the Jews following seventy years of captivity.
Like many of the cities and villages throughout the Empire, the gospel spread more quickly among women than among men, transforming them from the inside out.
The change was quickly noticed by their unbelieving husbands, who, for the most part, were antagonistic toward a religion that had won their wives' admiration and affection.
Women were subjected to harsher treatment than slaves by their husbands, having no rights or independence. Many lived in constant fear, taking every precaution to avoid provoking their husbands' anger.
Despite the brutality they faced, God had instilled in them an unquenchable love for their husbands. Rather than seeking revenge, they aimed to live in a way that would reveal God's power to their husbands and touch their hearts.
Therefore, Peter directed these cherished daughters of God on how to achieve the desire of their hearts. This would be a day when their husbands no longer abused or scorned them but instead led them in worship of the Savior, Jesus Christ, who had rescued both of them from eternal darkness and from exile from the presence of God.
The Apostle also wanted the believing wife to understand that, as with their own journey to Christ, their husbands' spiritual progress would take time.
Therefore, she should avoid constantly preaching, nagging, or pleading with her husband to repent and turn to Christ in faith.
Often, the gospel that was passionately preached would be heard but not retained. The God of this age had hardened many hearts, so regardless of what their wives said, they refused to listen.
Peter kindly explained to the women of the church that the way to win their husbands was to submit to their leadership at home, stop preaching at them, and let their husbands observe their actions and behavior over time.
Through consistent observation, husbands will see evidence of a transformed heart, which may prompt them to consider Christ's message and come to know the God who saved their wives.
