Facebook, and YouTube (Calvary Inverness) as we continue our study in Matthew’s Gospel.
It was the final night of Jesus’ life. He spent His last hours with His men. He had Peter and John go and prepare a room for them to commemorate Passover. Traditionally, the place they went to is called the “Upper Room.” It may have been in the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark and sister of Barnabas. Whether it was or not, it was the final place and time they would have been together.
God gave Israel Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread so that they would never forget what He had done for them by liberating them from their four-hundred-year bondage to the Egyptians.
The Feast was also what Jesus would do for the nation and the world. Just as Israel selected a one-year-old lamb, held it for four days, sacrificed it, placed its blood on the doorposts of their homes, and spent the next seven days making sure they did not eat anything with leaven.
In less than twenty-four hours, Jesus would fulfill the type found in Passover and the hundreds of Old Testament prophecies regarding His death, burial, and resurrection. Everything that would occur and the words spoken at the precise moment would be according to those prophecies.
By the time Jesus uttered those famous words, “It is Finished!” There would be a new way to be made right with God. It would mean a person could have their sins covered and cleansed, never to be held against them again. This was also a fulfillment of a promise that God made hundreds of years earlier when He told Jeremiah to write, “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people” (Jeremiah 31:31,33).
May Jesus’ teaching fill our hearts with the knowledge of His word, prepare our hearts to receive Him, prepare our hearts to share the gospel with anyone who will listen, and keep our eyes and affections open to His imminent return.
There are several worship opportunities: on-campus (10:00 a.m.), drive-in church (92.1 fm.), and online (Facebook and YouTube: Calvary Inverness).
In His Strong Love,
Pastor
